Punjab News: The Sikh Gurudwara Prabandak Committee (SGPC) has objected and halted the work on the ‘Heritage Street’ project in Anandpur Sahib, citing concerns over blocking the view of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, the Tribune reported. 

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is a significant Sikh heritage site in Rupnagar (Ropar) district of Punjab. 

The Heritage Street Project is an initiative of the Punjab Government’s Tourism Department, and Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj stated that the project wasn’t discussed with SGPC or Sikh High Priests, according to the report.

Gargaj emphasised that changes around Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib require Sikh Panth consent. 

The project, it said, aimed to beautify Anandpur Sahib, mirroring Amritsar’s Heritage Street, and coincide with Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th martyrdom anniversary.

The street would feature redesigned shopfronts, architecture reflecting Sikh cultural legacy, and enhanced spiritual appeal. Most of the shopkeepers running businesses along the Keshgarh Sahib road have agreed to the project, the report added. 

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, as quoted in the report, said, “Anandpur Sahib is the soul of Sikh history. We’ll persuade SGPC to allow work.”

It added that the citing Tourism Department sources that the project by approved by SGPC, and delays risk budget lapse.
