Chandigarh mayor election 2024 is being considered the first round of 'The BJP vs INDIA alliance.

11:00 am: AAP and Congress councillors protested outside the municipal corporation office and alleged that the BJP has been intentionally circulating a message about the deferment of mayoral elections. The message, reads, “It is informed that a telephonic message has been received regarding the ill health of Sh Anil Masih, who has been nominated as Presiding authority for the meeting scheduled on 18.1.24 for the post of mayor u/60 (a) read with Regulation 6(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation(Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulation 1996. In view of the above, it is requested that you do not reach the municipal corporation office till further orders are received.”

10:45 am: Kanwardeep Kaur, Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandigarh, said, "600 personnel of the Chandigarh Police have been deployed. Besides, the Rapid Action Force of the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) has also been deployed. All preparations have been made to maintain law and order here."

10:15 am: Heavy security deployed outside the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation office ahead of the election, which will begin at 11 am.

10:00 am: Currently, the BJP has 14 councillors, with ex-officio MP Kirron Kher, who also has voting rights in the local body while the AAP has 13 councillors, the Congress has 7 and Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor in the house.

9:45 am: As part of the alliance, the AAP has kept the mayoral post for which Kuldeep Dhalor will be contesting while Congress' Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi will contest for the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor posts. On the other hand, the BJP has nominated Major Sonkar for mayor, Kuljeet Sandhu for senior deputy mayor and Rajinder Sharma for the deputy mayor post.

9:30 am: Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party Raghav Chadha recently said he was confident that the INDIA alliance will sweep the Chandigarh mayoral polls. He added that the victory will play as a curtain raiser for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Chandigarh mayor election 2024 Highlights: Chandigarh was all set to get a new Mayor on Thursday as the city was closely monitoring mayoral polls, which was being considered the first round of 'The BJP vs INDIA alliance. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this was going to be the litmus test for the Bharatiya Janata Party. 

Chandigarh Mayor Election 2024 was scheduled on January 18. This year, AAP and the Congress party have formed an alliance under which, AAP will fight for the mayor's seat while the Congress will contest for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor posts.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 14 councillors while Aam Aadmi Party has 13 councillors, and the Congress has 7. On the other hand. the Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor in the House.
