Punjab News: High Court stays Abohar Municipal Corporation elections; Here's Why

A petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the new ward delimitations made by the Abohar Municipal Corporation.

In a significant intervention in the Abohar Municipal Corporation election process, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the issuance of the election notification till further orders.

The court has issued a notice to the Punjab government seeking its response on a petition challenging the ward delimitation and has given clear directions that no notification regarding the Abohar Municipal Corporation elections should be issued till then.

A petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the new ward delimitations made by the Abohar Municipal Corporation.

The petitioners say that, as per the instructions of the Central Government, no change could be made in the boundaries of any ward after December 31, and all ward boundaries were “frozen”. Despite this, the Punjab government issued a new ward delimitation notification on January 8, they said, calling it a "blatant violation" of the central government's orders.

The petition argues that since the central government's guidelines prohibit drawing new boundaries after December 31, the Punjab government's decision to implement new ward delimitations in January is legally inconsistent and arbitrary. The petitioners have urged the High Court to quash the ward delimitation notification, claiming that it undermines the democratic process.

The court also clarified that no notification regarding the Abohar Municipal Corporation elections will be issued till further orders. This court order has put a temporary stay on the election process.
