Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has vowed to safeguard the rights of Nangal residents by permanently resolving the longstanding land dispute that has cast a shadow over the town, according to an official release.

Bains has described Nangal as “Punjab's and the country’s most beautiful town.”

He has pledged to protect residents’ livelihoods, as the BBMB's claim over prime land, particularly in the Kilan area market and Pahari market, threatens the city’s lifeline, the release said.

The release, citing a video message from the minister, stated that Bains recently met elderly residents and shopkeepers and was moved by their decades-long struggle marked by constant fear and harassment.

"They live with the dread that their roofs and livelihoods could be snatched away at any moment," Minister Harjot Singh Bains is quoted as saying.

He has termed the situation “unacceptable.” A recent High Court order related to a shop has further heightened the urgency for a resolution, it added.

The AAP leader has assured the residents of Nangal, saying, “You have placed your duty upon me; I am your son, the responsibility for every single roof and every single shop in Nangal is mine.”

The minister has expressed his commitment to resolving the issue urgently. A high-powered committee comprising Punjab’s top officials, including the Advocate General, will examine land records and lead the effort, the release stated.

The minister asserted that the land belongs to the Punjab Government and alleged that BBMB has been harassing residents. The goal, he said, is to restore land rights to residents through legal means and end their insecurity. He emphasised that this issue is his top priority.
