On Wednesday, Punjab director general of police Gaurav Yadav launched a technology-driven “Vision 2026” blueprint to make the force more efficient, responsive and professional through major infrastructure and capability upgrades, with Dial 112 at its core.

Under the initiative, a dedicated Dial 112 Central Control Room will be set up in Mohali at an estimated INR 52 crore, while INR 50 crore has been allocated to augment the emergency response vehicle fleet. The DGP said the objective is to reduce the current average response time from 12–13 minutes to 7–8 minutes. To support this, district control rooms across Punjab will be upgraded with INR 25 crore for seamless coordination and faster incident management.

According to police sources, border security enhancements include installing 2,367 CCTV cameras at 585 international border locations to strengthen surveillance. Anti-drone capabilities are also set to expand with additional systems under procurement, and Drone Response Teams will be further linked with Village Defence Committees.

Officials noted that over INR 800 crore has already been spent on modernising the police in the past three years, with vehicles and infrastructure upgraded statewide. An INR 426 crore mega police infrastructure project will build a new cybercrime headquarters, police lines in Nawanshahr and Malerkotla, and 11 new police station buildings, the police said. Witness protection schemes and enhanced connectivity in police stations are also part of the vision to improve conviction rates and operational readiness.
