India’s Armed Forces Get Major Upgrade: INR 4,666 Cr MoD Deal for Carbines & Torpedoes

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed contracts worth INR 4,666 crore for the procurement of Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbines and heavyweight torpedoes. This marks a significant step in strengthening the combat capabilities of India’s armed forces.

According to officials, the deals were formalised in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who witnessed the signing of two separate contracts.

Under the first contract, which is valued at INR 2,770 crore, the MoD will acquire over 4.25 lakh CQB carbines along with associated accessories for the Indian Army and Indian Navy. The suppliers for this contract are Bharat Forge and PLR Systems, the latter being a joint venture between Israel Weapon Industries and the Adani Group.

The MoD described the carbines as an integral part of modern infantry warfare, providing enhanced lethality in confined spaces through their compact design and high rate of fire. The ministry said that this procurement aligns with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision and underscores greater collaboration between the government and private defence industries.

In another agreement, the MoD signed a deal worth approximately INR 1,896 crore with WASS Submarine Systems SRL of Italy for the supply and integration of 48 heavyweight torpedoes and related equipment for the Indian Navy’s six Kalvari-class (P-75) submarines. Delivery of these torpedoes is expected to begin in April 2028 and be completed by early 2030, significantly enhancing underwater combat capabilities.

The acquisitions reflect the government’s continued push to modernise India’s defence infrastructure and meet the operational requirements of its armed forces with cutting-edge technology.
