In a shocking development, devastating landslides struck near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district, resulting in at least 54 confirmed deaths, according to State Minister AK Saseendran. The disaster has left hundreds feared trapped, prompting an immediate and extensive rescue operation.

Health Minister Veena George reported that more than 70 individuals have sustained injuries. In response, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has mobilized Fireforce and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, with an additional NDRF team en route to Wayanad.

Two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been dispatched to aid in the rescue efforts. Local concerns are mounting over the possibility of more people being trapped.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased victim, and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Minister George updated reporters, stating, "We are making every effort to rescue those affected. We have received 24 bodies across various hospitals and around 70 individuals are injured. We are ensuring they receive adequate medical care." She also noted that a local bridge has been washed away.

Kerala's Chief Minister has confirmed that all government agencies are fully engaged in the rescue operations following the landslides. Additionally, 225 Army personnel have been deployed to support the efforts, as reported by ANI.
