Army Officer Charged with Rape for Allegedly Deceiving MP Police Constable with False Marriage Promise, latest news: A 48-year-old Army officer was charged on Thursday with raping a 42-year-old female constable of the Madhya Pradesh Police, posted in Bhopal, under the false pretext of marriage.

Police have registered a case against Lieutenant Colonel Varun Pratap Singh, currently posted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 69 (sexual intercourse by using deceitful means or making a false promise of marriage) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation), based on the survivor’s complaint.

The accused allegedly threatened to kill the woman if she filed a complaint, stating, "Varun told me that if I lodge a complaint, he will bump me off and hang me."

When contacted, Bhopal Police Women Security Assistant Commissioner Nidhi Saxena confirmed that the accused is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army and that his unit has been informed about the case. She stated that if he voluntarily appears for interrogation, it would be acceptable; otherwise, the arrest procedure would be initiated.

The police officer explained that engaging in a physical relationship under the false promise of marriage and later reneging on it qualifies as rape under the law.

According to the FIR, the MP Police constable met Singh in 2012 when he claimed to be a bachelor. In 2013, she discovered he was married, but he assured her he was getting a divorce. He repeatedly delayed marriage with various excuses. On February 24, 2025, she learned that Singh had multiple relationships with similar false promises. When confronted, he refused to marry her.
