Clashes Erupt at Khalsa College Over Election Dispute; Student's Turban Displaced

The clash occurred following a letter from Khalsa College Principal Gurmohinder Singh to Delhi University’s administration.

Delhi Khalsa College Clash With Sikh Student Leader Latest News Today: A violent clash broke out between two student groups at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University, outside the college principal’s office on Sunday. The conflict arose after the college, following directives from the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), decided not to participate in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. During the altercation, a student’s turban was knocked off, escalating tensions.

A viral video captured the chaotic scene, showing students gathered outside the principal’s office when the situation turned violent. A red-turbaned student was pulled back and assaulted by several others, resulting in his turban falling to the ground. Fortunately, some students intervened, stopping the attack, retrieving the turban, and returning it to the student. The assaulted student was then escorted away from the scene.

The victim filed a police complaint, and an FIR was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. These include charges related to hurting religious sentiments, causing harm, criminal intimidation, and involvement in a group attack. An investigation into the incident has now commenced.

Dispute Over College Election Participation

The clash occurred following a letter from Khalsa College Principal Gurmohinder Singh to Delhi University’s administration, stating the college would not participate in the DUSU elections. Instead, student leaders would be selected by the Staff Advisory Committee, a decision influenced by the DSGMC, which manages four Delhi University colleges, including Khalsa College. This move sparked widespread protests from students.

Student Protests

Both ABVP and NSUI student groups assembled outside the college to protest the decision to withdraw from the DUSU elections. The ABVP has also filed a petition in a Delhi court, challenging the DSGMC’s decision to disassociate its colleges from the DUSU polls. The situation remains tense as students continue to oppose the DSGMC’s directive.
