According to IANS reports, “She was born as Manikarnika Tambe in Varanasi; she became Rani Lakshmibai after marrying Maharaja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi in 1842. When the British attempted to annex her kingdom under the Doctrine of Lapse, Lakshmibai assumed leadership, trained soldiers, and led her army against colonial forces. She laid down her life in battle, emerging as a symbol of valour.

PM Modi said in a post on X, “A respectful tribute to Mother India’s immortal warrior queen, Rani Lakshmibai, on her birth anniversary. The story of her bravery and valour in the first war of independence still fills the hearts of the countrymen with zeal and passion today.” He added, “A grateful nation can never forget her sacrifice and struggle for the protection of the pride of the motherland.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage, stating that Rani Lakshmibai “made the protection of the motherland the supreme purpose of her life” and played an unforgettable role in shaping the 1857 revolution with her foresight. He emphasised that her courage and leadership on the battlefield continue to inspire generations.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav joined the tributes. He called her the “epitome of indomitable courage, patriotism, and self-respect” and praised her role in uniting the country against British forces.

Rani Lakshmibai’s life exemplifies courage, as she refused to follow the societal expectations of her time, choosing instead to lead armies and govern her kingdom with authority. Her legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding India of the indomitable spirit of its freedom fighters.

As India commemorates her 191st birth anniversary, the nation honours not only a historical icon but also a timeless symbol of courage, leadership, and self-determination.
