Air India has announced the resumption of its nonstop flights between New Delhi and Shanghai (PVG), effective 1 February 2026. It marks the airline’s return to mainland China after nearly six years, according to an official statement by the airline. Subject to regulatory approvals, Air India also plans to launch nonstop flights between Mumbai and Shanghai later in 2026.

The Delhi–Shanghai route will operate four times a week using Boeing 787-8 aircraft. It features 18 flat-bed seats in business class and 238 spacious economy class seats. This makes Shanghai the 48th international destination served by the Air India Group, which continues to carry more international passengers than any other airline in India.

The reinstatement of services follows recent India-China diplomatic agreements that restored air links paused in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Air India first launched nonstop flights to mainland China in October 2000, making this restoration a significant milestone in bilateral connectivity.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, said the resumption is “more than a route launch. It is a bridge between two great, ancient civilizations and modern economic powerhouses. At Air India, we are happy to reconnect one of the world’s most vital air corridors, enabling travelers to pursue opportunities in business, trade, healthcare, education, and culture with the comfort and warm Indian hospitality that define Air India.”

Industry experts note that reopening this corridor is expected to boost trade, business, and people-to-people exchanges, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, technology, and education. It also provides opportunities for Indian companies to enhance their international operations and narratives in China.

Bookings for Delhi–Shanghai flights are now available through Air India’s website, mobile app, airport ticketing offices, contact centers, and travel agents worldwide. With the MEA’s approval facilitating India-China direct air connectivity, this resumption underscores the growing focus on strengthening economic ties and cultural engagement between the two nations.
