As India celebrates Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025, banks, schools and offices will remain shut in several states to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has listed this date as a bank holiday.

According to the RBI’s official holiday calendar, banks will remain closed in multiple states and Union Territories, including Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Nagaland, West Bengal, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

While physical bank branches will remain closed, customers can use digital services such as UPI, net banking, and ATMs for all necessary transactions. The Mumbai-based stock exchanges (BSE and NSE) will also remain closed on this day.

The day with deep cultural and spiritual significance marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, also known as Gurpurab or Guru Parv. Across India, especially in Punjab, devotees will participate in prabhat pheris (early morning processions), kirtans, and langars (community meals) organised by gurdwaras to spread the teachings of the Guru — equality, humility, and service to humanity.

In addition to banks, schools, colleges, and government offices in several states will also remain shut. As holiday schedules can vary between private and government institutions, parents are advised to check with their local school authorities or official WhatsApp groups for confirmation.

Seeing closures across various sectors, citizens are encouraged to plan their financial and official activities in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
