Delhi Air Quality and Pollution Latest news today: The air quality in Delhi has plummeted drastically post-Diwali, registering a startling Air Quality Index (AQI) above 400 in many parts of the capital, far beyond the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO). As of Sunday morning, the city was blanketed by dense smog, with AQI levels exceeding 500 in some areas like Anand Vihar, where pollution reached “hazardous” levels. In regions such as Alipur, Punjabi Bagh, and RK Puram, the AQI ranged between 300 and 400, classifying the air quality as “severe.”
Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) revealed an alarming increase in pollution, with AQI readings escalating from 327 to 447 overnight. Such extreme levels pose serious health risks, exacerbating respiratory issues and impacting daily life, particularly in high-risk areas like Alipur and Anand Vihar. With PM2.5 concentrations now more than 65 times above the WHO’s recommended limit, Delhiites are facing some of the world’s most dangerous air conditions.
This surge in pollution is not unprecedented. Following Diwali celebrations, the capital has often seen severe dips in air quality due to firecrackers, construction dust, and industrial emissions. The current situation draws parallels to past instances where public figures faced death threats amid turbulent political and security climates. For example, former Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique, who was targeted in an alleged death plot, and actor Salman Khan, who remains under security following similar threats, underscore the multifaceted challenges Indian authorities face regarding both environmental and personal safety.
As Delhi reels from the post-Diwali pollution, residents are urged to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, and government officials are working on intervention strategies to combat this recurring crisis.
