Canada Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants, Punjabi Community Faces Major Impact
Chandigarh, May 31, 2025: Following the United States, Canada has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants, causing panic among thousands, especially within the Punjabi community, the Babushahi reported.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued over 30,000 deportation warrants as part of its aggressive immigration enforcement campaign targeting:
- Individuals with rejected asylum claims
- Visa overstayers
- Those involved in criminal activities or residing with forged documents
The Punjabi community, a significant part of Canada’s South Asian diaspora, is hardest hit, with many young men facing deportation due to expired work permits or study visas.
Immigration expert Parvinder Singh Montu, as per the report, revealed that nearly 88% of deportees are failed asylum seekers, many relying on weak or fabricated claims to remain in Canada.
Students who discontinued their studies, tourist visa holders who overstayed, and even some Permanent Resident card holders linked to crimes are also targeted in this crackdown.
The cost of deportation is steep, as per Babushani report:
- Standard deportation costs 3,800 CAD
- Deportation with a security escort costs 12,800 CAD
These costs must be repaid before re-entry applications are considered.
Pooja, MD of New Image Immigration Consultancy, as cited in the report, highlighted a sharp rise in fraudulent asylum claims — over 20,000 filed in 2024 alone, with 98% deemed fake, marking a 615% increase since 2019. This surge has overwhelmed the immigration system, prompting faster enforcement actions.
As fear spreads, immigration experts urge undocumented individuals to seek immediate legal advice and discourage false claims or overstaying visas.
