Mohali High-Rise Safety: PSHRC Orders Major Review of All Residential Societies
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has launched a comprehensive safety review on fire safety compliance in high-rise buildings following a major fire event in a residential society.
The Commission initiated suo motu proceedings after a viral video surfaced online showing a flat at Bollywood Green City, located on the Landran-Fatehgarh Sahib Road, completely engulfed in flames.
The fire reportedly originated in flat number 58-C before spreading to adjacent units. The incident has sparked serious concerns regarding the lack of functional firefighting equipment at the site.
PSHRC member Jitender Singh Shunty observed that the episode highlights major gaps in disaster preparedness and building safety monitoring across Mohali’s residential complexes.
The Commission has summoned the Chief Administrator of GMADA, the Municipal Corporation (MC) Chief, the Deputy Commissioner, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). These top officials are required to submit comprehensive reports by the next hearing on January 27.
The PSHRC has mandated that the reports include specific details on evacuation protocols, early warning systems, and the availability of emergency medical tools like CPR machines.
The Commission noted that any failure to adhere to fire safety norms is a direct violation of residents' human rights, demanding that the matter be handled with top priority.
