Punjab SC Commission Receives 3,750 Complaints; Chairman Calls for End to Caste Bias

Caste-based discrimination continues to exist in society, despite being in direct contradiction to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, said Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi on Sunday. He made these remarks after paying obeisance at the Golden Temple, where he prayed for the well-being of all humanity.

Addressing mediapersons, Garhi stated that the Sikh Gurus preached equality, humanity and universal brotherhood. He said these principles should be reflected in daily life. However, he noted that caste discrimination remains a harsh reality even today.

Sharing his experience as Commission Chairman, Garhi said he has personally observed the seriousness of the issue. He disclosed that the Commission has received nearly 3,750 complaints related to caste discrimination this year alone. He emphasised that the Commission is committed to working honestly and diligently to remove caste bias from society. Guided by the principle of equality, he said the Commission will not hesitate to carry out its duties.

Responding to a query, Garhi remarked that caste-based thinking still affects certain political leaders, resulting in irresponsible comments. He added that during his visit to the shrine, he prayed that those who try to divide society on caste lines are granted wisdom.
