A Life for Punjabi Theatre: Veteran Neena Tiwana Receives Prestigious Punjab Gaurav Award

The Punjab Art Council, Government of Punjab, recently honoured veteran actress Neena Tiwana with the Punjab Gaurav Award for her lifelong dedication to Punjabi theatre. The prestigious award was presented by Padma Shri Nirmal Rishi, who acknowledges Tiwana as her mentor.

Neena Tiwana’s journey began as one of the first Punjabi graduates of the National School of Drama in 1965, alongside her late husband, Harpal Tiwana. Together, the couple is credited with pioneering the professional Punjabi theatre movement, successfully building a culture of ticket-buying audiences in the state.

Over a career lasting more than 60 years, she has delivered iconic performances in stage productions such as Kanak Di Balli, Loha Kut, and Diva Bale Saari Raat. Her role as a Sardarni in the film Long Da Lishkara made her a household name. Beyond the stage, she appeared in the TV series Saanjhi Deewar and the film Haat – The Bazar.

Her global recognitions include the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and honours from the SGPC. Beyond acting, she has authored a book titled Oh Jo Si. Although health concerns have paused her stage performances, she is currently writing a book on acting techniques. Her son, Manpal Tiwana, noted her vital role in preserving his father's legacy. Throughout her career, she helped nurture legendary talents like Om Puri, Raj Babbar, and Gurdas Maan.
