Versatile Punjabi Writer Surjit Kaur Bains Passes Away at 86


Prominent Punjabi author Surjit Kaur Bains passed away early Wednesday morning at her residence in Mohali following a brief illness. She was 86 years old. Her final rites will be performed on January 8, 2026, at 12:30 PM at the Balongi crematorium in Mohali.

Bains was a prolific creator who contributed significantly to Punjabi poetry, short stories, and prose. She was the author of approximately ten books, showcasing a deep capability across multiple literary forms. Her body of work includes widely acclaimed titles such as 'Ik Raat Jaagdi Ae' (1969), 'Reejhan' (2006), 'Sunenana' (2008), 'Reshmi Kudi' (2014), 'Sun Surjit' (2018), and her latest release, the autobiography 'Main Te Mere' (2023).

The author was known for her ability to highlight the depths of life and for her bold presentation of the internal struggles of women alongside prevailing social realities.
