According to ANI, on March 17, around 250 members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal, Nagpur, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. The protestors burnt a photo of Aurangzeb and displayed a symbolic green cloth reportedly filled with cow dung. This act led to tensions in the area.

Later, rumors began circulating that a religious book had been desecrated. These claims reportedly provoked anger among members of the Muslim community. That evening, a group of around 100 people gathered in Bhaldarpura, and incidents of stone-pelting and vehicle arson were reported.

In response to the escalating violence, the police resorted to lathi charge and tear gas to control the situation. So far, 50 people have been detained, and additional security forces have been deployed.
As per the official order, a “communication ban (curfew)” has been enforced under Section 163 to restore peace and prevent further unrest.

"During the lockdown period, no person should go out of the house for any reason other than medical emergencies, nor should more than five people gather. Orders have also been issued to prohibit the spread of rumors and any other disruptive activities," the order states.

The order further mentions that anyone violating the curfew "remains punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)."

However, the order clarifies that it "will not apply to on-duty police officers and employees, government and administrative officers and employees, students appearing for essential exams, and personnel from the fire brigade and various essential departments."Authorities urge residents not to believe in rumors, as the rest of the city remains peaceful
