Punjabi Youth from Phillaur's Bhaini Village Killed in Mississauga After Trying to Stop Fight

Jagjit Singh Sandhu was declared brain dead and died after life support was removed following the September 6 attack

In Mississauga, Canada, a Punjabi youth paid with his life for trying to break up a fight. He went to stop a scuffle that had begun over a racial remark made against another Punjabi man, when the girlfriend of a local white man stabbed him in the neck with a knife, severing the veins in his neck.

He was rushed to hospital, but died after spending some time in the ICU. Doctors said the cutting of the blood vessels had cut off the oxygen supply to his brain. After the incident, the woman fled the spot.

The deceased has been identified as Jagjit Singh Sandhu, who belonged to village Bhaini, near Phillaur.

Jagjit's sister said the incident took place on September 6, but the police have only now taken action. Her brother was trying to protect another Punjabi youth from a fight and racial remarks outside a local shelter, when an argument broke out with a white man. During this, 42-year-old Lavrena Sanche stabbed Jagjit in the neck from behind.

In the attack, the main blood vessels in Jagjit's neck were severed. Due to excessive blood loss, he was declared "brain dead" at the hospital, and he died after life support was later removed. Police have arrested the accused woman and charged her with "second-degree murder" (a category of intentional killing).

Following the incident, the deceased's sister, Jaspreet Kaur, released a video on social media raising serious questions about Canada's law and order and the police administration. Jaspreet alleged that after the incident, the police failed to inform the family in time and did not give them the opportunity to attend court hearings.

Weeping, she appealed, "Canada is no longer safe for children. The system and the leaders here are fast asleep." Following the incident, there is widespread anger and concern over safety among the Indian and Punjabi communities living in Canada.
