Accused held for 12 hours before house sprayed with bullets, police reveal
Canada: For the first time in Canada, a woman of Punjabi origin was arrested in connection with an extortion case; however, Calgary police later released her. She has been ordered to appear in court on October 6. Police allege that Kanupreet Kaur, of Punjabi origin, provided the shooter with the victim's home address and identity.
According to Calgary police, two adults and one minor have been charged in this high-profile extortion case. Police stated that on March 25, the victim received a threatening message on WhatsApp from an unknown number. Police said a large sum of money was demanded from the woman, though the amount was not disclosed. The accused already had confidential information about the woman's name, home address, business, and family. About 12 hours after the threat was received, miscreants opened indiscriminate gunfire at the woman's house.
According to data released by local police (CPS), 51 extortion cases have come to light in the city since April 2025, of which 19 cases directly involved shootings. So far, police have laid 59 different charges against 19 accused in these cases. Local police have appealed to people that if they receive any phone call or message related to extortion, they should not panic and pay money, but should immediately contact the police.
According to police, the investigation into this case began on March 25, when the victim started receiving WhatsApp text and voice messages from an unknown number demanding money. The accused repeatedly contacted the woman and issued direct death threats to her. Within just 12 hours of the messages being sent, the criminals fired indiscriminately at the woman's house and fled in a car. However, no one was injured in this shooting.
