Foreign affairs minister Shama Obaed Islam asserts the law will take its course against Sheikh Hasina
A state minister of Bangladesh said on Monday that if ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returns to Bangladesh, she will be sent to jail. This statement comes at a time when there are reports that the Awami League leader is preparing to return to Dhaka by December. Sheikh Hasina is the 78-year-old daughter of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Hasina had to step down from power on August 5, 2024, following violent student protests. Since leaving Dhaka, she has been living in India. According to the state news agency BSS, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said that if she surrenders, action will be taken according to the current law. She will have to go to jail. The law will take its course. Last week, sources close to Hasina had said that she is preparing to return to Dhaka by December.
