Bangladesh Battles Measles Crisis After Dozens of Child Deaths, Mass Vaccination Campaign Rolled Out

Officials plan to gradually extend the programme nationwide in the coming weeks.

Bangladesh Measles Outbreak Death Toll Latest News Today: Bangladesh is facing a growing public health emergency as a sharp rise in measles infections has claimed the lives of more than 100 children in recent weeks. In response, authorities have launched an extensive immunisation drive aimed at curbing the outbreak and protecting vulnerable populations.

The campaign, supported by international partners such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is currently focused on children aged six months to five years in 18 high-priority districts. Officials plan to gradually extend the programme nationwide in the coming weeks.

Spike in Cases Raises Alarm

Health data indicates a worrying surge in measles cases since mid-March, with thousands of suspected infections reported across the country. Laboratory confirmation has already been established in hundreds of cases, underscoring the scale of the outbreak.

Experts attribute the rapid spread to gaps in routine immunisation. Many affected children had either missed their vaccine doses or had not been vaccinated at all, leaving them highly susceptible to infection.

Rama Flowers highlighted the seriousness of the situation, noting that young children are bearing the brunt of the outbreak. She also pointed out that infants below nine months face heightened risk, as they are too young to receive standard measles vaccines.

Urgent Need to Strengthen Immunisation Coverage

Measles is known for its high transmissibility, spreading easily through the air and infecting those without immunity. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, and skin rashes, but complications can be severe, especially among undernourished children.

The World Health Organization recommends that at least 95 percent of the population be vaccinated to effectively prevent outbreaks. Falling short of this benchmark has made certain regions in Bangladesh vulnerable to rapid transmission.

Authorities Push for Immediate Action

Health teams are now working on the ground to reach communities with low vaccination coverage, aiming to close immunity gaps and halt further spread. Parents are being urged to participate in the campaign and ensure their children are protected.

As the country works to contain the outbreak, officials stress that swift and widespread vaccination remains the most reliable way to prevent additional fatalities and restore public health stability.
