Muslims Join Sikhs to Build Gurudwara in Saharanpur After 12 Years

Twelve years after the Saharanpur clash, members of the Muslim community are helping build the Gurudwara that once caused conflict.

In 2014, a dispute over the land of a Gurudwara in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur turned into communal violence. But now, after 12 years, the picture has changed. Where there was violence, a new example of brotherhood and unity has emerged from that place. The land where once there was tension between the Sikh and Muslim community, today both the communities are building a Gurdwara together. Muslim people are picking up cement-gravel, shoveling, and donated labor while servicing the car.

In July 2014, a dispute arose over the land adjacent to the historic Shri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara located near the railway station. The gurdwara management claimed that this land has been legally purchased and a langar hall is to be constructed here along with the expansion of the gurdwara. On the other hand, the Muslim side said that a part of the land is a waqf property, where earlier prayers were offered.

During the construction, the dispute escalated and soon turned into communal violence. After this, the case went on for a long time at the court and administrative level. On Tuesday, when the work of putting in a lintel in the Gurdwara started, many people from the Muslim community, including Muharram Ali alias Pappu, reached the construction site.

During this time, the people of the Gurdwara management and the Muslim community welcomed each other with hugs. On behalf of the Gurdwara Singh Sabha, the representatives of the Muslim community were honored by wearing shawls. This scene was completely different from those days when there was an atmosphere of tension and violence in this place.
