Mathura rains turn streets into rivers, submerge underpass neck-deep; 100-ft wall collapses amid chaos

Monsoon has covered the state of Uttar Pradesh. Intermittent rain has been occurring in 15 cities since early Friday morning. In Mathura, heavy rain lashed the city for 30 minutes starting at 1 PM. The railway underpass filled with water up to neck-level. Streets turned into flowing rivers. A scooter and shopkeepers' goods were swept away.

In Kanpur, heavy rainfall occurred from 1 AM to 5 AM in the early hours of Thursday night. The GSVM Medical College got flooded. Cars and bikes were half-submerged. A 100-foot wall of the Ordnance Factory collapsed. An apartment building had to be evacuated after its basement wall caved in.
Meanwhile, in Jhansi, a farmer died after being struck by lightning. In Unnao, rainfall was so intense that water entered homes. Jalaun also witnessed rain accompanied by a storm.

Today, a rain alert has been issued for all 75 districts of UP. Heavy rainfall is expected in 11 districts. Warnings for hailstorms and lightning have been issued. Winds may blow at speeds of up to 40 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h in some areas.

However, looking at the period from June 1 to July 2, 2026, the state has received a total of 58.3 mm of rainfall, against the normal figure of 106.8 mm for this period. This means the state has recorded a 45% deficit in rainfall so far.
