Fee hikes by private schools curbed in Punjab as new ordinance Is notified

Private schools barred from raising fees beyond five percent; government credited with major relief to lakhs of families.

The notification of the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 has been welcomed as a historic and people-centric move by Malvinder Singh Kang, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament from Sri Anandpur Sahib. The ordinance was hailed by him as a landmark win for the parents and students of Punjab.

Gratitude was expressed by Kang to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, and it was stated that a commitment to protect families from arbitrary and unjustified fee hikes imposed by private schools has been fulfilled by the Punjab Government. The ordinance, it was said, reflects a firm political will on the part of the government to place the interests of common people above those of powerful private institutions.

AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal was also thanked by Kang, and it was noted that the foundation for education reforms in the country was laid by him, and a governance model centred on quality and affordable education was inspired by his vision. It was said that this landmark reform has once again been carried forward by the Punjab Government in keeping with that vision. It was stated by Kang that for years, parents were exploited by private unaided schools through fee increases imposed at will, and education was treated by such institutions as a commercial enterprise. With the implementation of this ordinance, it was affirmed, such arbitrary practices will be brought to an end. It was made clear by the government, he added, that fees will not be allowed to be increased by more than five percent by any unaided private educational institution, and that transparency and accountability will thereby be brought to the system.

Kang said that the financial burden on lakhs of families across Punjab will be significantly reduced by the ordinance, and that much-needed relief will be provided to parents who have long been burdened by unchecked fee hikes. An appeal was made directly by Kang to the people of his constituency, and it was said that if arbitrary fee hikes or any other form of exploitation continues to be indulged in by any private school, his office should be approached immediately by parents. It was informed by him that his office, located at Plot No. 577, Gillco Valley, Sector 127, Kharar, will be kept open from 9:00 AM onwards every day so that parents facing such issues can be assisted.

An assurance was given by him that every possible support would be extended to affected families by him and his team, and that no private school would be allowed to violate the law or exploit parents. It was reiterated by Kang that a full commitment to ending the exploitation of parents is held by the Bhagwant Mann-led government, and that affordable, transparent and accessible education is sought to be ensured for every child in Punjab.
