In addition to virtual hearings, the Supreme Court has also adopted energy-saving measures.
The Supreme Court of India has introduced new measures aimed at improving efficiency, reducing operational costs and promoting hybrid functioning within the judicial system. According to an official circular, hearings in the apex court will now be conducted only through video conferencing on Mondays and Fridays, which are designated as miscellaneous or non-regular hearing days.
The decision applies particularly to cases listed on miscellaneous days as well as during partial working schedules of the court. The registry has been directed to ensure that video conferencing links are shared on time and that stable technical support is available so that proceedings continue without disruption.
In addition to virtual hearings, the Supreme Court has also adopted energy-saving measures. Judges have collectively resolved to encourage car-pooling arrangements to reduce fuel consumption. The initiative is seen as part of a broader effort to align institutional practices with cost-saving and environmental considerations.
The circular further states that 50 per cent of the staff in each registry branch will be permitted to work from home on a rotational basis for two days each week. However, the remaining staff will be required to remain present in office to maintain continuity of work. Branch registrars will prepare weekly rosters and ensure employees remain available on telephone and ready to attend office when required.
The arrangement will remain in effect until further orders, with branch heads authorized to modify or suspend work-from-home provisions depending on operational requirements and workload conditions within their respective departments.
