The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative has officially evolved into a nationwide movement, driving transformative change for the girl child. Celebrating over a decade of progress, the government reported that this mission has successfully contributed to a marked improvement in critical gender indicators, reflecting a long-term shift in social behaviour and public awareness across the country.

Data from the Health Management Information System reveals a substantial rise in the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB). The figures improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2024-25, showcasing the efficacy of sustained interventions in addressing gender-based discrimination and ensuring the survival and dignity of the girl child from the very moment of birth.

Educational gains have been equally significant. According to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), girls’ enrolment at the secondary level grew from 75.51 per cent in 2014-15 to 80.2 per cent in 2024-25. These figures demonstrate a clear success in boosting retention and transition rates, ensuring more girls remain within the formal schooling system.

Launched on January 22, 2015, the BBBP programme is a joint effort implemented by the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare, and Education. It was specifically designed to tackle the declining child sex ratio through a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach involving state agencies and local communities.

The initiative adopts a comprehensive lifecycle approach that prioritizes protection, early childhood development, and long-term empowerment. Through seamless coordination between various ministries and sustained community advocacy, the government aims to solidify this support structure. These ongoing efforts are designed to ensure that every girl child receives the necessary resources to thrive, effectively bridging the gap between policy intent and ground-level outcomes.
