Concerns over women’s safety in Delhi continue to persist as the national capital reported the highest number of crimes against women among 19 major metropolitan cities in 2024, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.

While the overall rise in cases compared to last year was marginal, several categories of crime remained alarming, especially kidnapping and rape.

  • 13,396 cases of crimes against women were registered in Delhi during 2024.
  • The figure was slightly higher than 2023, when 13,366 cases were reported.
  •  In 2022, the number stood at 14,158.
  • Delhi recorded 3,974 kidnapping and abduction cases involving women, the highest among all metropolitan cities.
  • A total of 1,058 rape cases were registered during the year.
  • Dowry death cases remained unchanged at 109.
  • One acid attack case was reported in 2024, compared to six such incidents in the previous year.

The NCRB data further showed that Delhi ranked fourth in crime rate against women after Jaipur, Indore and Lucknow. Crime rate is calculated on the basis of cases registered per one lakh female population.

The latest NCRB figures underline continuing concerns over women’s security in the capital despite repeated claims of improved policing and surveillance.
