Renowned educationist and former Governor breathed his last in Kolhapur after a prolonged illness leaving a vast legacy in Indian education

Padma Shri awardee, renowned educationist, and former Governor Dr. D. Y. Patil passed away at his residence in Kolhapur on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 91. His death marks the end of an era for Indian education and public service.

Dr. Patil was widely respected for building one of India's largest educational networks through the D. Y. Patil Group, which today runs universities, medical colleges, engineering institutions, schools, and hospitals across the country. His efforts helped expand access to quality education and healthcare for thousands of students.

Apart from his contribution to education, Dr. Patil had a distinguished public life. He served as the Governor of Tripura and Bihar, and held additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal. In recognition of his contribution to education and social service, he was honoured with the Padma Shri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with leaders from across the political spectrum, paid tribute to Dr. Patil, remembering him as a visionary who transformed the lives of countless students through his commitment to education and nation-building.
