Founded in 1974, the company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board.
Starting from June 5, World Environment Day, Mother Dairy is launching India’s first-ever biodegradable milk pouch. This move aims to eliminate plastic waste in the environment.
The initiative introduces a unique packaging innovation that allows the material to convert into bio-available wax. Once discarded, this wax is broken down naturally by soil-dwelling microorganisms, ensuring that the packaging does not leave behind any persistent plastic traces or pollutants in the soil.
Founded in 1974, the company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board. It has established itself as a key supplier in the Indian dairy sector, selling approximately 55 lakh liters of milk daily across various states through its extensive retail network.
Managing Director Jaytirath Chari stated that this achievement is the result of over four years of dedicated research. He explained that while these pouches remain fully recyclable, their standout feature is their ability to decompose into natural elements, which directly combats the persistent problem of "fugitive plastic" often seen littering the landscape.
National Dairy Development Board Chairman Meenesh Shah highlighted the strategic importance of this launch, noting that the new material is engineered to decompose within years rather than centuries. He emphasized that this environmental commitment is being delivered without any impact on milk prices, proving that industry leaders can successfully set new standards for sustainability while remaining accessible to the common consumer.
