Poor visibility and slippery roads due to heavy rain and fog suspected behind the fatal Chamba highway accident.
Five members of the same family died in a horrific road accident near Lahad on the Bharmour-Pathankot National Highway in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district. The family was returning home after getting their three-month-old daughter treated at PGI Chandigarh when their Alto car went out of control late on Monday night and fell into a deep gorge.
On receiving information about the accident, police, administration, and relief and rescue teams reached the spot. Due to the nighttime hours and the difficult terrain, the relief and rescue operation proved challenging. After considerable effort, all the bodies were pulled out of the gorge.
Dalhousie SDM Anil Bhardwaj confirmed that all five people who lost their lives in the accident were members of the same family. A wave of grief swept through the entire region following the incident. According to preliminary information, it was raining continuously in the area at the time of the accident, and there was heavy fog. It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to poor visibility and slippery conditions, though the actual causes of the accident will only be confirmed once the police investigation is complete.
Police have registered a case and begun investigating the causes of the accident. The administration has appealed to people to exercise extra caution while travelling on hill routes during the monsoon season.
