Five Years of Lakhimpur Kheri: Farmer Bodies to Hold Candlelight March in Chandigarh

Morcha demands swift trial, punishment under law and full implementation of UP government's promises

Chandigarh: On the fifth anniversary of the tragic incident that took place in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3, 2021, the Kisan-Mazdoor Morcha chapter of the Punjab-Haryana farmer and labour organisations will hold a candlelight march in Chandigarh. The march will begin at 6 pm from Chandigarh Kisan Bhawan towards Matka Chowk. Tributes will be paid to the farmers and the journalist who lost their lives in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

Four farmers and journalist Raman Kashyap were killed in the incident that occurred during a farmers' protest in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3, 2021. Following the investigation, a chargesheet was filed against several accused, including Ashish Mishra, under various sections, including murder, and the case is currently pending before the court.

The Kisan-Mazdoor Morcha is demanding that the judicial proceedings against the accused be completed swiftly, that they be punished in accordance with the law, and that justice be ensured for the victims' families.

The Morcha will also demand full implementation of the agreements and announcements made by the Uttar Pradesh government to the families of the martyred farmers. Under the 2021 agreement between the government and farmer leaders, the families of the four deceased farmers were given compensation of ₹45 lakh each and a government job for one family member, while the injured were given ₹10 lakh each, and a judicial inquiry into the matter was announced.

Leaders of the Kisan-Mazdoor Morcha said that the memory of the martyred farmers and the journalist of Lakhimpur Kheri cannot be limited to an annual commemoration. They said the issue will keep being raised before the public until the victims' families receive complete justice and the government's promises are fully implemented.

Leaders and activists of farmer and labour organisations from Punjab and Haryana are expected to take part in the candlelight march in large numbers. Tributes will be paid to the martyred farmers and the journalist, and justice will be demanded.

A contingent of the Punjab Kisan-Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee set out for Chandigarh from Beas Bridge this morning and will take part in the evening's candlelight march. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher shared this information. Prominent leaders taking part in today's Morcha include state general secretary Ranbir Singh Rana, Lakhwinder Singh Varyam Nangal, Satnam Singh Manochal, Harwinder Singh Masania, Inderjit Singh Kaliawala, Sarwan Singh Baupur, Darshan Singh Moga, Paramjit Singh Bhulla, Harbhajan Singh Vairon Nangal, Balwinder Singh Rumana and Singh Pathankot.
