The report warns that accelerating biodiversity loss could trigger severe sovereign debt crises, as financial markets currently fail to account for environmental health in credit assessments, leaving 83 trillion dollars of assets exposed to dangerous mispricing.
While environmental degradation is a known risk, it remains excluded from mainstream sovereign debt models. The study introduces a biodiversity-adjusted credit rating framework to highlight this systemic vulnerability. Researchers are now calling on central banks, regulators, and international rating agencies to urgently integrate nature-related financial risks into their assessment models to prevent potential economic instability.
Major economies face the highest stakes. Under a partial ecosystem collapse scenario, India’s sovereign credit rating could plummet by four grades, while China could see a 5.5-grade decline. Such downgrades would force these nations to pay significantly higher interest rates on their national borrowings, placing a massive, avoidable strain on their government budgets.
This failure to price ecological risks carries a staggering economic cost. The report estimates that partial failures in wild pollination and marine fisheries could slash global GDP by 2 trillion dollars annually. For India, this implies an additional 49 billion dollars in annual debt servicing.
As nature loss reduces productivity, governments may be forced to raise taxes or cut spending to service these mounting debts. The study concludes that the cost of protecting ecosystems is far lower than the price of letting them collapse.
