Air India Fuel Surcharge Hikes from April 8: Domestic Rs 299–899, International USD 24–280 for Travelers
Air India will introduce a revised fuel surcharge for domestic and international flights starting April 8. Domestic surcharges will range from 299 to 899 rupees, while international flights will see charges between 24 and 280 dollars. The updated fees will also apply to Air India Express, the group’s budget carrier.
The airline has shifted from a uniform domestic surcharge to a distance-based system, following the government’s cap of 25 percent on domestic aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price increases. The move aims to balance operational costs with affordability for passengers.
Global jet fuel prices have climbed sharply, reaching 195.19 dollars per barrel in the week ending March 27, compared with 99.40 dollars at the end of February. Fuel costs account for approximately 40 to 45 percent of an airline’s total operating expenses, making surcharges a necessary adjustment for carriers.
Certain routes, including flights to Bangladesh, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea, will have surcharge details announced separately after receiving regulatory approvals. Passengers are advised to check fare details before booking, as charges may vary depending on distance and destination.
Other domestic carriers have already increased fuel surcharges in response to rising ATF prices, with Indigo implementing higher fees on affected flights.
Travelers should note that the April 8 changes will affect bookings on both domestic and international flights, including low-cost services operated by the group’s subsidiaries.
