Nutrition Fortnight 2026: Boosting Early Childhood Brain Development Across India
The Ministry of Women and Child Development will launch the eighth edition of Nutrition Fortnight on April 9, focusing on nutrition and early childhood development. The fortnight will continue until April 23 and will be held under the leadership of the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, with State Minister Savitri Thakur and Secretary Anil Malik in attendance.
This year’s theme, “Maximizing Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life,” underscores the government’s commitment to improving nutrition outcomes across the country. The initiative highlights the critical role of the first 1,000 days of life in brain growth, physical development, and overall health. Scientific evidence indicates that over 85 percent of brain development occurs by the age of six, emphasizing the importance of adequate nutrition, sensitive caregiving, and early education.
Key focus areas include promoting maternal nutrition during pregnancy, encouraging breastfeeding, and providing age-appropriate complementary feeding to ensure proper maternal and child nutrition. Early stimulation activities will be emphasized for children up to three years of age to support optimal brain development.
For children aged three to six years, the program will promote play-based learning, aimed at supporting holistic development and school readiness. The program is designed to strengthen early childhood care, encourage learning activities, and support the overall development of children.
