What is a bone marrow transplant?
A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells to restore the body’s blood-forming system. Bone marrow is a soft tissue inside bones that produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which are essential for oxygen transport, immunity, and blood clotting. When bone marrow fails due to diseases like cancer or genetic disorders, a transplant becomes necessary. Healthy stem cells are collected either from a donor (allogeneic transplant) or from the patient themselves (autologous transplant). Before the transplant, chemotherapy and sometimes radiation are used to destroy unhealthy marrow and prepare the body. The healthy stem cells are then infused into the bloodstream, where they travel to the bone marrow and begin producing new blood cells in a process called engraftment. Recovery may take several weeks to months, and patients require close medical supervision because their immunity is temporarily weak.
