200 more join plea against fee hike by Sec-47 school

CHANDIGARH: The court of chief judicial magistrate Akshdeep Mahajan has allowed 141 parents of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, Chandigarh, to add more plaintiffs in a civil suit against the management of arbitrarily hiking the monthly tuition fee.

Around 200 more plaintiffs have been added to the civil suit taking the number from 142 to 350. In its reply to the plea, the school had claimed that these applicants had failed to pay the fee for academic year 2017-18.

The court observed that the explanation was ‘clearly untenable’. Gurpreet Singh and others, parents of children in the school, had pleaded before court that the school be asked to take back the ‘illegal, arbitrary and unsustainable hike of 2,200’ in monthly tuition fee.

The petition said the school had doubled the monthly tuition fee that varied from 4,800 to 4,975 across nursery to Class 12. “The monthly tuition fee being charged by the school was around 2,700. The hike is against rules,” the suit said.
